Everyone wants a great vacation, but in today’s tight economy, you may think you cannot afford one this year. How can you have a great vacation if you are watching every penny?

The first bit of advice in planning your trip is to figure out exactly how much you can afford. It does no good to plan a Costa Blanca vacation then find out at the last minute you don’t have the funds. Figure out how much of your discretionary income you can set aside for a vacation this year. If you need slightly more, you can get it by pinching pennies in other expenses, but it is best to have a good idea what funds are available.
Next, figure out what your family wants in a vacation. Make sure you all agree on what you want. Do you enjoy camping? State parks are often inexpensive places to spend a vacation. You can hike, bike and enjoy the beach, often for free or for merely the price of admission to the park.
Does your family enjoy the city more? Why not take day trips to your nearest big city and explore what it has to offer. Many cities have museums specifically for children. Does your family like spending time on the water? Rather than spending your precious vacation fighting the crowds on the popular beaches, try an inland lake. These beaches are generally much less crowded. The accommodations and other amenities are generally much less expensive too.
You may be surprised that resorts can be a very reasonable option for a budget location. While the initial price may seem high, remember the price usually includes everything for your trip, include accommodations, activities and dining. Some offer free beverages throughout your stay. When you add up what you spend, you will see how affordable a resort can be.
Another way to save money is to book a travel package. Hotels, car rental agencies and airlines often have relationships with each other: Book a room at a certain hotel and get a significant discount on your car rental. Tourism businesses often have arrangements with travel and automobile clubs as well.
Just because you need to save money doesn’t mean you have to give up your vacation. Remember, the point of a vacation is to relax and spend time with your loved ones. You will have a better vacation if you are not worried about spending money you don’t have. Your vacation is usually a once-a-year treat, so make the most of it.
